Hatsuko, who is poor and has no friends, finds emotional support in Mishima, a boy in her class, who helps her with her study to go to a high school together. However, Hatsuko's brother causes trouble at the factory and gets the sack. Hatsuko gives up her dream of going to high school.
Onchi Eiko, the proprietress of a bar, is trapped in a sad, hidden past. One day, an old friend Shigeko shows up with her 5-year-old son Daiji in tow. Shigeko entrusts him to Eiko and disappears after she leaves a farewell letter. As Eiko looks at the innocent Daiji, she is reminded of her own past. The two of them who have no one to turn to, begin a life together as fake mother and son in this peculiar and yet heartrending story.
The theme of the story is first love. The film depicts a variety of first loves, but the happily ever after begins to take an unsettling turn, and the first love takes a sudden turn in an unexpected direction. The film is a story in which 17 actors were initially chosen, and then cast in roles and written for each actor based on his or her individuality.
