The film was an attempt to translate the direct address of live performance to a lock-down art TV format. It was effective, in that 14 people contacted me after watching to tell me I had appeared in their dream. If a performance can be thought of as an act of appearing to an audience, then this film can be thought of as a tool which facilitates a performance.

The Island 2022

In Sam Keogh’s The Island, his avatar – a whimsical ‘bushranger’ styled as a tree-being – leads the viewer through the technicolour cartoon dreamscapes of the massive online video game Fortnite. In the game, 100 players are parachuted onto a deserted island where they must scramble for resources and fight to the death, a task made more urgent by ‘The Storm’. The last one alive is the winner. The whole island sits in the eye of this storm which incrementally contracts, forcing players into confrontations with each other. Keogh’s narration draws connections between the game’s mechanics and the environmental impacts of its increasing membership.

'Silicon Valley' links three sites in California's Santa Clara valley; the threadbare visitor centre of Nasa's Ames research facility; the better maintained but privately owned 'Intel Museum'; and the Winchester Mystery House - a haunted mansion built by the guilt-ridden widow of riffle maker. These locations are linked through a circular motif which morphs between globe, disk, and scrying ball as its shape is noticed and captured by Keogh's iPhone SE.
