Donna Summer - Live and More Encore! 1999 (9.5)

Since her '70s heyday as disco's reigning diva (and one of its most adventurous artists), Donna Summer has scored the odd hit: "She Works Hard for the Money," "This Time I Know It's for Real." She's still best remembered for the likes of "Last Dance," "Dim All the Lights," and "I Feel Love," though, and this VH1-tie-in comeback bid concentrates on full-bodied if somewhat murkily mixed versions of those classics and their kin. The two new studio cuts that round out the disc are OK at best, although they do display Summer's ability to adapt to changes in pop-dance sounds.

Same Sex America 2005 (3.5)

In the spring of 2004, Massachusetts began the final battle of its journey towards legalizing same-sex marriage. This documentary follows a few local couples & their families through the months leading up to & shortly after that defining occasion in LGBTQ+ history, culminating in their respective weddings. Also includes interviews with active opponents attempting to discourage the movement (& failing, of course). Premiered at the Independent Film Festival of Boston in April 2005, just a month short the decision's one-year anniversary.

The Firesign Theatre: Weirdly Cool 2001

This PBS special, concocted in support of the wickedly witty Firesign Theatre's "The Bride of Firesign" CD, has the comedy troupe delivering high-octane humor in a number of classic bits. Featured are skits such as "How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You're Not Anywhere at All" and "Hand Me the Pliers," and characters such as Nick Danger, Jack Poet and Bebop Lobo. Extras include a documentary, excerpts from audio rehearsals and more.
