A young heiress settles into a holiday hotel in search of a suitable husband. There are enough groom candidates, some gentlemen, and some cheaters. All that is certain is that the misfortunes will not end.
Old Virtanen is a respected night watchman at a textile factory and a single father to his daughter Aino, who is about to graduate from high school. The heartless factory owner Kuusela fires Virtanen, who is forced to look for a new job. When Aino, who is in love with the manager's son Veikko, disappears after her graduation party, her father, who has fallen ill with worry, is overcome with despair.
Eino, a Karelian soldier wounded in the Winter War, cannot settle into his new home in Häme. He becomes embittered by the poor treatment of evacuees and loses his will to live. Annikki, a hard-working Karelian teacher, helps Eino regain his faith in the future.
