The most suffocating is the awareness that nothing is happening. All the veins are drying without the blood running through them. I came to Barão Geraldo because things happen here. Here people love as much as dolls hang themselves and chicken are slaughtered to death. Would I still hang dolls and burn memories in the next 18 years? It astonishes me how less and less I do not care for things that are not my extension. Being my own destruction is the only way. Intimacy is a farewell. All I see is a lot water and all the colors are not enough. All forms of comunication are not enough for a lot of water.

Ji Ling lives with her husband in Taibei, Taiwan. After a crash that killed their young child, Ji Ling is overcome with grief. Not able to forgive the couple who were driving the other car and even more frustrated with her husband's apparent lack of emotion, she flees to Shangri-la. While traveling, she encounters a young man named Alex who insists on accompanying her as a tour guide. They become close as they travel together but Ji Ling, upon discovering the young man's secret, feels betrayed and continues on her own. On her way to the holy Meili Snow Mountain she meets more disaster. During the long journey in Shangri-la, Ji Ling finds her own way to face the death of her child.

This drama is set in World War II Australia, where an American Marine, Rebel is recuperating from wounds suffered in battle. He is weary of war and is intent on going AWOL and escaping from Australia. He becomes infatuated with a local singer, Kathy and pursues her. Kathy is married and initially is not interested in him, but later begins to love Rebel. Kathy receives a letter advising her that her husband was killed in battle. The local police and the U.S. Military are searching for Rebel as an AWOL soldier. Rebel arranges to escape Austalia by a cargo ship, but eventually allows himself to be arrested in order to keep the local police from arresting Kathy for harboring him
