Because of business obligations, he fails to join them and, more or less, abandons his wife, Liz, to the hardships of her new surroundings. Mother and children are determined to make a go of it.

At the start of WWII the British Government decided to arrest all Germans in the UK no matter how long they had been there. Among those arrested were many Jewish refugees and many who were fully assimilated. This film records the story of a group who were sent to a POW camp in Australia aboard the Dunera.

One day, as Senior wanders aimlessly through the city, his attention is drawn to demolition workers tearing down an old building. Among the rubble, Senior discovers an old model ship. He takes it home and begins studying old ship logs and nautical charts. Thomas also shows interest, and before he knows it, he finds himself embarking on a new adventure with his friends and Senior.
