The film is the coming-of-age story of the child in the opening sequence, now a chicken delivery boy (although he hates chicken). Alienated from his father, and with an uneasy relationship with his (not gay-friendly) best friend, he meets a new customer. A lawyer going through a divorce, the customer is also alienated and lonely.
Adrian Monk was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic (and still unsolved) murder of his wife Trudy, he developed an extreme case of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Now working as a private consultant, Monk continues to investigate cases in the most unconventional ways.
A detective becomes obsessed with bringing a man to justice, whom he is sure is a serial killer and the murderer of a woman with which both men were involved. However, the supposed killer may be as much a victim as the murdered people.
