Small-scale farmer Pasi shoots four policemen who have come to arrest him for raged drunkenness. Rest of the movie is a long flashback examining the events that finally leads to the tragic shooting. As time goes by, Pasi sinks gradually deeper and deeper into the poverty, gets into trouble with both police and tax officials while family arguments grow more and more serious. TV studio organizer Mikko Syvärinen becomes the admired comedian K. Ovimikko through a series of mishaps. However, Mikko's popularity wanes when he switches from door comedy to window comedy. His show is taken off the air, his girlfriend leaves him, and he loses his apartment. Once again, Mikko sets out to rebuild his TV career by becoming a producer again.
Follows the life of a pauper child Vike Nilonpoika from the early 1900's to the 1960s. During this time he works as a lumberjack in Lapland after running away from the despotic master. He soon becomes familiar with hookers, card hustlers and alcohol.
