An aspiring stand-up comedian turns her struggles into heartfelt humor as she balances work and relationships while caring for her aging father.
Feng runs away from her rural home to pursue singing in Taipei but is trafficked to Japan as a prostitute. Years later, she returns to Taiwan, burdened by guilt and avoiding her family while secretly sending money home. Her brother Ming, now a police officer, searches for her, unaware of the life she now leads. Their paths cross under difficult circumstances, forcing both siblings to confront their past and present.
Anne—seated in an obstetrics and gynecology clinic—grapples with a heart-wrenching dilemma: whether to terminate her unexpected pregnancy to pursue a high-paying job in the United States or stay in Taiwan and embrace life as a single mother. As the conflict between her rationality and emotions intensifies, her deep-seated fear of family life emerges like an unfathomable monster from within, threatening to consume her entirely.
The filmmaker, a second-generation Taiwanese American, travels to Taiwan to interview her uncle and to reflect on colonialism, culture, memory, identity, and nationhood. By traveling, she gathers the pieces of herself and Taiwan that illuminate the precarious, yet faithful relationship between an individual and a country.
