About the life and work of the professional revolutionary Bolshevik F.A. Sergeev (1883-1921), known under the pseudonym Artyom. The film takes place in the period from 1905 to 1921 in Kharkov.
A young surgeon Alexander came to the village for a vacation. He is pleased with himself, everything is going well in his life: he is behind the institute, preparing his thesis, working in a famous clinic. However, soon Alexander decides to stay to work in a rural hospital.
The young schoolboy goes to the village where his grandfather died in battle during the Great Patriotic War. In the village, the boy finds friends among his peers. The boys decide secretly, by their own efforts, to build a monument to the fallen soldiers. Gradually, their work ceases to be secret - and fellow villagers join in the construction of the monument.
