Ian Kincaid (born November 25, 1954) is a gaffer. Born in Santa Barbara, California, under his birth name Ian Rush Kincaid, he pursued a career behind the scenes in the camera and electrical department rather than as an actor or cinematographer. Beginning his career in the early 1990s, Kincaid served as gaffer or chief lighting technician on a number of films. His early 1990 credits include Naked Tango (1990), Meet the Applegates (1990), The Last of the Finest (1990), and Lost Angels (1989). In 1991, he worked as a gaffer on The Doors (1991), Scenes from a Mall (1991), and contributed additional photography as a gaffer to The Marrying Man (1991) and One Good Cop (1991). His longstanding collaboration with cinematographer Robert Richardson, ASC, brought him onto high-profile projects. He worked on Casino (1995), where Richardson credited him among his “crack crew.” Subsequently, he contributed to Snow Falling on Cedars (1999), Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), and Inglourious Basterds (2009) as gaffer. Continuing into the 2000s and 2010s, Kincaid served as part of the lighting team on films such as Django Unchained(2012), Hugo (2011), Eat Pray Love (2010), World War Z (2013), and The Hateful Eight (2015), in roles such as gaffer or chief lighting technician. He was also the chief lighting technician on Adrift (2018). Kincaid has been Robert Richardson’s longtime gaffer, collaborating on as many as eighteen feature films together, including six directed by Quentin Tarantino.
