Maria is somewhat of a rebel and problem child. Her mother died and her father remarried some awful lady, and Maria isn't happy at all. She takes a drug overdose and winds up in a home for other girls with problems, but the two women who run the place turn out to be not quite the ladies they seemed. Maria knows she can't stay there very long, and starts planning her escape.
The film tells the story of Maja and Nikulás meeting and how they develop a friendship when she starts to visit him regularly. This worries Bergur, Nikulás' son, especially after he learns that his father intends to leave the girl an inheritance, a Chinese vase. Bergur takes action, and the short-lived adventure ends in a more tragic way than is usually the case in fairy tales.
A filmmaker joins a group of expert kayakers on a kayaking trip in the ice filled fiords of East Greenland. The group visit a remote inuit village, giving an insight into the habits of people in a magnificent country where, fonunately, the pace and stress of the Western world is still absent.
