A recently laid off steel mill worker in a little seaside town starts losing his wife to a local TV anchor.
Stefano doesn't believe in miracles. He's just above thirty, but he lives his life without passion. Every single morning, as he drives to work, he is swallowed up by the traffic of the Big City. Then, one evening, the unexpected happens. Stefano finds a parking spot right in front of his building, as well as the long-lost 'joie de vivre'.
Camillo is a thirty-year-old man who is innocent and naive. He does not speak, sees the world in black and white, and lives with two elderly puppeteers who picked him up somewhere. Camillo is a dreamer who believes he comes from a distant world, perhaps the Middle Ages. He likes to wear armor and helmets and go into the woods to fight his own private battles. His best friend is a boy with Down syndrome, the son of the town's marshal, the only one who seems to listen to the nonsense of the one who, for many, is just the village idiot. But suddenly, Camillo's adoptive parents die, and with them, the court of friends who revolved around him.

Pontecorvo is one of those Italian filmmakers marked for life by neorealism. He declares that he decided to do cinema after leaving a screening of "Paisa" by Roberto Rossellini. The future filmmaker was then in Paris, a year after a war during which he became one of the main figures of the Italian resistance and one of the founders of the Youth Front. Leaving his status as a war hero behind him, Pontecorvo made his directorial debut with "Giovanna", a short film heralding a cinematic career dedicated to what he himself calls the "dictatorship of truth."
