The home movies of the Jarret family are true “orphan films” that were found at a flea market in Pittsburgh, where they were rescued by the Orgone Archive. The collection, much of which was severely water-damaged, spans the years 1958 to 1967 and includes family events and scenes from David Jarret’s career as a firefighter. The family lived on Grove Street in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. The center of Pittsburgh’s jazz scene during its heyday from the 1930s to the 1950s, the Hill has been called the “center for music and night life between New York and Chicago.”

Jarret Family Home Movies (1958-67) N/A

The Jarret family’s films were shot between 1958 and 1967 by David H. Jarret, a firefighter from Pittsburgh’s historic African American Hill District, and span nearly three hours. As you watch family members and neighbors’ lives, from weddings to living room dance parties, a storyline emerges. Following Jarret’s death, years of neglect caused chemical decomposition of the image, resulting in a kaleidoscopic effect that evokes experimental filmmaking techniques. The Museum’s preservation of the film resulted in its return to the Jarret family descendants; it appears here with their approval.
