Ah Ming is a film student in the U.S. who returns to his hometown to try to make the first Macao movie. While using narrative to depict Ah Ming's struggles to complete his own film, the director intersperses interviews of various Macao citizens who speak about their needs and feelings about their city. The final collage expresses the diverse voices of a city that faces a turning point in 1999, when it reverts to China.

Director Chu Iao Ian felt it was not very suitable to record the changes of Macau in documentary after making “Macao, who we are?”. So he co-opted five directors to present their stories in five different districts; and finally came up with the birth of Macao Stories. They are: “The Best Times, The Worst Times” (directed by Ho Ka Cheng); “Uncertain” (directed by Chan Ka Keong); “Paper Plane” (directed by Vincent Hoi); “A Right Time” (directed by Chu Iao Ian) and “Macao Streets” (directed by Sérgio Perez).
Critically- acclaimed as the first Macau people’s movie under the Portuguese Administration, “Ah Ming’s Macao” was a touching semi-autobiographical short film about the director who returned to his place of birth from the USA in 1994 to make his master’s graduation film. Through the process of seeking funding from the government and private organizations for this short film, Ah Ming encountered difficulties in the creative work. Through interviewing different walks of people in Macau, Ah Ming also understood their different expectations toward the return of Macao to China in 1999.
