In the Shadow of the Light N/A

Jonas Mekas, sometimes called the godfather of the avant-garde cinema, actually dislikes documentary, because he feels the genre pretends to divulge everything about a subject. Still, the 85-year-old does not object to being filmed in the dusty Anthology Film Archives in New York, which he established in 1970. The packed storehouse is a fantastic treasure trove for lovers of the experimental film. The excitement of a young Italian, writing a paper on Harry Smith, when he comes face to face with a huge stack of film reels by his idol is contagious. Especially when he and a staff member start unpacking the psychedelic animation Mahagonny that was believed lost. We do not get to know everything about him and the experimental film genre, but this documentary, also related in form, is intriguing enough to make us want to.

Scary Man N/A

Winner of multiple international awards, hilarious and grotesque, inventive and imaginative, this truly unique and extraordinary Dutch film by Eugenie Jansen and Albert Elings is nothing less than a brilliant comment on human nature. It portrays the relationship between people and birds. Hoarse from shouting, tired from running, man eventually thought that the invention of the scarecrow would demonstrate his domination over birds. But the scare soon turned sour and the rag doll became little more than a symbol of the battle between man and bird. Geese in the meadow, sparrows in a glass house, pigeons in the city, starlings on an airport runway - the birds are everywhere. This grotesque story of too many birds and too many people competing for space and resources in a small country makes for a brilliant and very funny film.

The Waste Land 2024

A full century after publication, The Waste Land considers T. S. Eliot's namesake poem alongside our present, assuredly asserting that the words continue to resonate and to fuel our imagination. Filmmaker Chris Teerink offers no analysis of the poem, but instead seeks parallels. With a soundtrack by Dutch singer-songewriter Blaudzun, and using photographs and stills instead of moving images, he creates a slideshow that mirrors the fragmentary core of Eliot's language.
