Yarim (The Half) is the story of two halves setting out to become a whole, of the efforts made by two children to play the existing male-female roles. Fidan is a 15-year-old shepherd girl who lives in poverty with her family in a village in eastern Turkey. Her father gives her as a bride to an unknown family. A young art teacher hopes to be transferred to Istanbul after completing his mandatory duty in a remote village school in Anatolia. After accusations of inappropriate contact with a student surface, his hopes of escape fade and he descends further into an existential crisis.
A short while after his dominant wife abandons the wimpy and meek Hayati, who is a literary teacher in a patriarchal town, the police find an unrecognized female corpse by the lake. Hayati wants to state that the body belongs to his wife and to take the blame for the murder that someone else committed.
Mr. Cemal made every sacrifice for his three sons' education and worked tirelessly day and night to ensure that his children would have good careers. In the end, his efforts were not in vain, and all three sons had respectable professions. However, Mr. Cemal, who had endured many hardships for his three sons, was left alone as they moved to different provinces for work.
