Delia Mañara is notorious in her quarter of Buenos Aires for the mysterious deaths of two of her fiancés. She lives in a twilight world and gains most satisfaction through the exercise of power over others.
The story takes place in San Antonio de Areco, in the Argentine pampas. Fabio Cáceres remembers his childhood as an orphan and his youth working in the fields, alongside his godfather, Don Segundo Sombra, a lonely gaucho whom he admires and from whom he will learn to be a gaucho, following him in all his adventures. Don Segundo will be Fabio's role model.
Ismael, the weakest and most unstable member of a supposed group of conspirators with power aspirations, constantly suffers ridicule and contempt for his leader, Lucas, and his other companions. Everything changes when a woman with whom Ismael is in love begins to delve into the macabre logic of the group.
