The film takes place during a time of famine. Norway has been at war with England and Sweden, and times are tough. Gjest Baardsen has gotten into trouble with the law, apparently over a trivial matter. But Gjest breaks free, and instead it is the sheriff who is locked up in handcuffs. And Gjest continues to flee, with sheriffs and good people in tow.
Year after year lord Wakefield comes to Vang to fish. One summer he meets beautiful Anne and falls in love. The following spring Anne gives birth to a daughter and leaves the baby and drown herself. The local man of the law takes care of the child and calls her Kristine Valdresdatter.
Two young girls go to the big city to work in a food store. The owner's wife believes she's sick, and the owner is more than interested in the two girls. Based on Oscar Braathen's Novel.
